Photographer ／ Tourism Ambassador for Kochi Prefecture
Born in Kochi, Japan. A musician first, with a major-label debut,
he then taught himself photography and set about building a world of his own.
Working to a theme he calls “eternity, held in a single moment”, he photographs
the beauty of the earth and the landscapes of Kochi, to hand them on to those who come after.
He picked up a camera looking for something only he could make. Since then: the four seasons of Japan, World Heritage sites, the red earth of Sedona.
Four years of a weekly column in the Kochi Shimbun. The 110 photographs it carried became the book Earth of Beauty.
Chosen for Canon's worldwide corporate calendar. The same year, his series Scenes of Yugen began in the magazine Kateigaho.
Work presented at the Palazzo Medici Riccardi in Florence, and at the Milan Expo.
The Kochi Prefectural Museum of Literature, and the Ryoma Birthplace Memorial Museum.
Fantastic Japan (Yama-Kei Publishers) went on sale across Japan, and has been published every year since.
Exhibitions at the Aoyama Design Forum and Kyoto AMS. Work provided for the CD and DVD marking the 1,250th anniversary of Kobo Daishi.
A column, Impressions of Beauty, runs in the Yomiuri Shimbun. He photographs the covers of the quarterly Wago.
Photographing is, for me,
close to prayer.
What I want to hand over is the thing that cannot be put into words.
Light is hope itself. Working with photographs taught me to notice it.
